Iridium sells at least three products every Singapore vessel owner ends up considering: the Iridium 9555 handset, the Iridium GO! satellite hotspot, and the Iridium Certus 200 broadband terminal. Each is designed for a different job and picking wrong wastes SGD 1,000-5,000. This post covers what each does, when to pick it, and the SGD math per vessel type.
The three products in one sentence each
Iridium 9555 — the classic global satellite handset. Voice, SMS, very slow data. Handheld. For a person, not a system.
Iridium GO! — a small pocket-sized hotspot that creates a Wi-Fi bubble around it, letting up to 5 smartphones make Iridium voice calls and send SMS via app. Not broadband.
Iridium Certus 200 — a proper broadband terminal (176 kbps). Mounted, powered, always-on. Voice + text + slow data always available.

When to pick Iridium 9555
- You want a personal always-with-you global handheld
- You are outfitting a life raft or grab bag
- You need pure voice + SMS, nothing more
- Budget-conscious backup — cheapest global Iridium option
For a Singapore skipper who wants a “just in case” satphone that lives in their sea bag, this is the answer. IsatPhone 2 (Inmarsat) is a similar-tier alternative — cheaper, similar coverage except polar, longer standby battery.
When to pick Iridium GO!
- Small yacht with 2-5 crew who all need occasional satcom access
- Small offshore work team (survey party, small OSV crew)
- Want to keep using your regular smartphone (calls, SMS, WhatsApp via satellite app)
- Weight and space matter (fits in a jacket pocket)
The GO! is a nice-to-have for a small charter yacht — clients can text home from anywhere. For a commercial vessel, its lack of always-on operation and shared-hotspot model makes it less suitable than Certus.

When to pick Iridium Certus 200
- Commercial vessel that needs certified GMDSS voice (Certus 200 is IMO GMDSS approved)
- Vessel operating in Starlink-restricted waters where you need a reliable non-Starlink comms option
- Broadband backup behind a Starlink or OneWeb primary
- Deep-hull vessels where flat panels have obstruction issues
Certus 200 is not a bandwidth product — 176 kbps is nowhere near modern broadband. Its value is reliability, coverage, and IMO GMDSS approval. Every serious commercial vessel benefits from having one alongside a Starlink primary.
Airtime plans — what you actually pay
Iridium 9555 (Singapore pay-as-you-go) — SGD 65-90/month for 100 units voice/SMS. Additional units at SGD 1-2 each.
Iridium GO! plans — SGD 75-150/month for 5-20 hours of voice + unlimited SMS via app.
Iridium Certus 200 plans — SGD 500-1,200/month depending on data bucket (250MB to 5GB). Data-only plans available.
