Every private yacht owner in Singapore starting to shop Starlink runs into the same confusion: should you buy the Business plan (cheaper, designed for shore) or the Maritime plan (more expensive, designed for boats)? The honest answer depends on how far offshore you actually go and how much you value the maritime priority. This post walks through when each plan is the right choice, what you actually get for the price difference, and where owners over-pay.
The two products in one paragraph
Starlink Business — flat high-performance dish designed for shore installation (offices, remote workplaces). Higher-priority network access than consumer Roam plans. Not officially licensed for maritime use, but many yacht owners install it on their boats and it works fine in most conditions.
Starlink Maritime — same physical hardware options (flat HP is common) but licensed for maritime operation with dedicated maritime priority scoring, official maritime coverage areas, and terms of service that permit installation on vessels.

What owners actually experience — Business plan on a yacht
Reality: Starlink Business installed on a yacht in Singapore works. Signal quality within Singapore territorial waters is essentially identical to Maritime plan. Speeds are the same. In busy congestion moments, Business gets slightly deprioritised versus Maritime — noticeable maybe once a month during peak evening usage.
The catches:
- Terms of service technically prohibit maritime use. Starlink can theoretically terminate the account if they detect vessel movement. In practice, enforcement is rare but not zero. Some yacht owners have had accounts suspended after moving too fast for too long.
- No warranty support if the dish fails at sea. Warranty on Business is shore-based support.
- Insurance grey area. Some marine insurance won’t cover a Business-plan Starlink for maritime use.
When Business is genuinely the right pick
- Yacht stays mostly on mooring, occasional day trips within 5 NM of shore
- You want a cheaper monthly airtime (Business at 40GB tier is SGD 220/month vs Maritime Local Priority at 320)
- Boat is registered as a house boat or non-navigating platform
- You accept the ToS risk in exchange for savings

When Maritime is genuinely the right pick
- Yacht regularly moves — weekend cruises, charter operation, offshore passages
- Insurance requires maritime-licensed comms
- You’ll be operating outside SG territorial waters (Malaysian, Indonesian, Vietnamese)
- The vessel is under charter contract (charterers frequently require licensed maritime comms)
- Peace of mind matters — you don’t want account termination risk
Starlink Mini for occasional use
Third option worth considering: Starlink Mini on Roam Regional plan (SGD 65-90/month). Portable, cheap, works fine for weekend cruises up to 20 NM offshore. Less bandwidth than Business or Maritime but a fraction of the cost. Great backup or entry-level primary for smaller yachts.

Maritime is only SGD 1,500 more than Business over 3 years — mainly hardware cost. Once you factor in insurance and ToS risk, most owners we advise land on Maritime for anything above weekend day-trip use.
