For yachts, harbour craft, coastal tugs, and small commercial vessels operating within 20–30 nautical miles of Singapore, a properly-installed marine 4G/5G router will beat Starlink Mini on both price and simplicity. Singapore’s coastal cellular coverage from Singtel, StarHub and M1 reaches well past most operating zones — you just need the right antenna and router setup to catch it. This guide covers what actually works, real-world offshore range, and what it costs.
Where 4G/5G actually reaches offshore in SE Asia
Cell tower elevation and antenna height determine offshore range far more than raw signal strength. Practical range with a decent external marine antenna:
- Singapore Strait (Singapore, Batam, Bintan operators): 25–40 NM offshore with mast-mounted antenna
- Malacca Strait (Malaysian coastal towers): 15–30 NM depending on tower placement
- Indonesian coastal (Batam, Bintan, Karimun): 20–30 NM from major towns
- Vietnamese coastal (Ha Long, Da Nang, HCM area): 15–25 NM
Beyond 30 NM you generally lose useful bandwidth. That’s when Starlink or OneWeb takes over.
The four components of a marine 4G/5G setup
1. External marine antenna — this is the biggest determinant of range. A dedicated marine LTE/5G antenna (Poynting XPOL-2 or similar) mounted at mast height gives you 3–5x the effective range of the router’s internal antennas. Cost SGD 250–450.
2. Marine router with cellular modem — Peplink MAX BR1 Pro 5G or Teltonika RUTX50 are common. Cost SGD 900–1,800.
3. SIM cards from local operators — Singtel, StarHub, M1 for Singapore waters. For SE Asia, dual-SIM setup with a Singapore SIM and an Indonesian SIM (Telkomsel or Indosat) covers most operating zones.
4. Onboard WiFi distribution — the router’s built-in WiFi or a mesh setup below deck.

- StarHub Enterprise Data: comparable to Singtel, slightly cheaper at similar tiers.
- Circles.Life or GOMO consumer plans: cheaper but standard priority. Fine for weekend cruises.
For SE Asia roaming: add an Indonesian SIM (Telkomsel unlimited plans from ~SGD 30/month for the vessel’s dedicated device) or use a global multi-country IoT SIM (Twilio Super SIM, 1oT).

Install considerations
Antenna placement matters more than any other decision. Mount as high as practical — mast head is ideal, T-top is second best. Keep 1m minimum from any other antenna. Ground the antenna and cable shield to the vessel’s bonding system.
Use LMR-400 or equivalent low-loss coax for runs over 5m. Never splice — use factory-terminated cables. Every splice adds insertion loss and shortens your effective range.
Route cabling away from engine harnesses and inverters to reduce interference.
When it makes sense to add a 4G/5G router to a Starlink installation
Even if you already have Starlink Mini or Starlink Maritime, adding a 4G/5G router as a bonded WAN gives you:
- Lower cost data — offloading crew traffic to 4G in port saves priority Starlink data
- Improved reliability — automatic failover if Starlink drops
- Better in-port performance — 4G/5G is often faster than Starlink Mini in busy port areas
- Backup for MPA compliance — some MPA rules require redundant comms
